This song was suggested to me by a person attending one of the contemplative retreats at Laity Lodge at which I was leading worship. It had been composed by retired Abilene Christian University choral director, Jack Boyd. Dr. Boyd is a renowned choral arranger and author but this is the only original song that he has composed. I immediately made a connection with it and did include it on our last day of worship and communion for the retreat.

The vocal was recorded using a droning note for pitch reference over the course of two evening sessions in the Cody Center at Laity Lodge in the Fall of 2013. The sound of crickets outside during one of the nights kept me from using any of the takes since the vocal is so exposed! As it turned out, I had sung with a natural rhythm and was able to add a simple electric piano part beginning in verse two along with a pad that Wendy eventually added violin to. She then wrote the cello line which Trevor Fitzpatrick played during a later session in Portland, Oregon.

I love the fact that this song can be interpreted and enjoyed at multiple levels. For me, it profoundly captures my own journey of faith and calling as a recording artist and composer these past forty years.

Hear that music? That’s the world,
calling you to walk that way.
You must learn that you’re my child –
You must sing my song.

Useless pleasure, sterile fame;
Leave that darkness, find my light.
Take my hand and walk away;
Child of mine, sing on.

You left darkness for my light;
You can’t walk down every path.
Now you’re halfway to your goal;
Listen for my song.

Live your life, but don’t look back;
Time, like water, drifts away.
Tell my story, do my work;
Child of mine, sing on.

Sickness, anger, pain and war,
All behind as memories leave;
Though the world called you to doubt,
Still you sang my song.

All of that you will forget;
Now your place is here with me.
Your work’s finished – welcome home!
Child of mine, sing on.
