For a number of years, I have been including this nineteenth century hymn by Folliott S. Pierpoint & Conrad Kocher while leading Selah worship. I initially recorded the piano part and was working with Brian on the flute part when he asked me why I had wanted to release another version of this melody? I was dumbfounded and asked him what he was talking about. He said this is the same melody as “As With Gladness, Men Of Old” which we had very recently recorded for our Christmas CD, “Under The Wonder Sky” with Wendy! I felt completely stupid but realized that I tend to store music in my brain “lyrically” rather than “musically.”

Of course when I worked with Wendy on the piece, she asked the same thing. But this time I was more philosophical and implied that it was intentional on my part to give the melody a different treatment and context, ;-)

It is a beautiful melody and the words are equally beautiful beginning,

For the beauty of the earth,
for the glory of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies;
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

But in the flow of the album, I needed a piece without words that would follow the starkness of the previous song, “Broken, Gazing” and this one was perfectly related in concept and musical key.
