Great Romantics
By Jeff Johnson
– Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau Castles
Füssen, Germany / August 1988

"The king was quite romantic."
That is what she said of him,
As she led us through the castle rooms of Hohenschwangau.

A prisoner of his musings,
A dreamer, more than royalty –
A traveler on a long, lost trail of shadow lands and fantasy.

And looking from this window at his castle on the hill,
I have a sense of what he dreamed, the vision survives still.

He was, after all, the great romantic.
He was, after all, the great romantic.

And all of us are dreamers,
As we stare into our mirrors,
Imagining we're someone that we never had a chance to be.

Watching from our windows,
Pulling strings, remote controlling,
Holding up the great facades that prop our lives with meaning.

And looking from our windows at his castle on the hill,
I have a sense of what he dreamed, the vision survives still.

We are, after all, just great romantics,
We are, after all, just great romantics.

When we lay awake at night staring at our ceiling full of stars,
Mystery and fabrication wage war on our ceiling full of stars.

We are, after all, just great romantics,
We are, after all, just great romantics.
